Castaic High School Updates

April 17, 2013, Update on Castaic High School
The Board of Trustees voted 5-0 to name the school Castiac High School. The Castaic Naming Advisory Committee recommended seven names to the board, as per Board Policy 7310 and the board selected Castaic High School. An online survey was conducted in February for community members, parents, staff and students to suggest a name for the new school, anticipated to open in August 2016. More than 330 suggestions were submitted. The Citizen Advisory Naming Committee was formed and met last month to review the survey results. The following people were on the naming committee: Gail Pinsker - Chair; Greg Lee - Hart District Director of Human Resources and Equity Services; Flo Lawrence - Castaic Town Council; Greg Kimura - Val Verde Town Council; Pete Romo - Valencia High School parent living in Castaic; Barbara Cawley - West Ranch parent living in Castaic; Roxanne Kamins - Castaic Elementary School representative (Parent / PTA); Michele Olafsson - Castaic Middle School representative (Teacher / Parent); Suzanne Graff - Live Oak Elementary School representative (Teacher / Castaic Teachers Association President); Kim Baljet - Northlake Hills Elementary School representative (Teacher / Parent); Renee Sabol - Castaic resident and John Zaring - Castaic resident / parent. The following seven names were recommended by the committee: Castaic High School, Castaic Lake High School, Castaic Hills High School, Ramona High School, Kashtuk High School, Romero Canyon High School and Lakeview High School.

March 26, 2013, Update on High School in Castaic
Progress is being made on many aspects of the project, including plans to name the school, groundbreaking ceremony planned, community information meeting scheduled and retaining a company to oversee the Mitigation Monitoring Program. Outside agencies, including the County of Los Angeles and utility service companies, are involved with permitting and obtaining necessary easements for construction of this 198 acre site, with a planned 71.4 acre school campus.
Naming the school - The Castaic Naming Advisory Committee representatives met on March 26, 2013 and created a list of seven names to recommend the board to select the name of the school. The board will take action on this item at the April 17, 2013 regular board meeting. As is stated in board policy, the board may select from the recommended names, or chose one of its own. A community survey was held in February with more than 330 entries, which was reviewed by the committee. The suggestions that will be recommended to the board are not necessarily the top vote getters, but the names that are most significant or noteworthy. Castaic Information Meeting - A meeting for the Castaic community will be held during the second half of 2013 to discuss the progress of construction and design of the high school that is scheduled to open in August 2016. Exact date will be announced in the future. Providing information during this meeting will be Robert Challinor, Superintendent and Benjamin Rodriguez, Chief Operations Officer. They will discuss the projected building timeline, current status of the project. Other information will include a discussion of the conceptual site plan for the school, with the architects, mitigation monitoring company representative and property developer on hand, and education specifications that will meet the needs of students including academics, sports, electives and extra-curricular activities. Families in the Castaic and Val Verde communities, with students currently in 6th grade or younger, are urged to attend, to learn more about the school that their children will attend.
Mitigation Monitoring Program - The school board approved the retention of a mitigation monitoring company at the March 20, 2013 meeting, for purposes of overseeing the implementation of mitigation measures adopted as part of the EIR approval of October 2012. Meredian Consultants, LLC has been retained for this project and will monitor potential impacts of the project during construction including biological resources, cultural resources, geology and soils, air quality, aesthetics, noise, air quality, traffic and other environment-related concerns.

We are dedicated to providing the citizens of Castaic with a state-of-the-art high school, while being mindful of the environmental impact to the Castaic area and our neighbors."

Hart Governing Board authorizes district staff to fully analyze a proposed "hybrid site" as an alternative site for Castaic area high school. The "hybrid site" expands the current preferred Romero Canyon site with the additional acreage of an adjacent property that became available for purchas Nov. 2011. Preferred site is 60 acres.

The Hart District's environmental consultant is finalizing the hybrid site's Environmental Impact Report (EIR) sections and is analyzing this preferred site under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
