Hello Parents and Students, All of the staff at la Mesa are very concerned about keeping our school as safe as it is right now.  We are especially concerned about the issue of bullying.  We know all of you are aware of la Mesa's Bully Prevention Program.  We know you all have heard teachers, counselors and administrators talk about the fact that bullying others is harmful.  Many of you have seen the Teen Truth presentation.  You know we take it seriously! We would like very much for many of you to fill out a short survey regarding your thoughts about our bully prevention program, which we like to call, "BUDDIES NOT BULLIES".  Thank you in advance for your continued support!

Alyssa Piper ~ Difference Maker for the 2010/2011 School Year

La Mesa Jr. High School’s difference maker for the 2010/2011 school year is Alyssa Piper. She is involved in community service and she welcomes new students with open arms. She is seen many times talking with people who seem lonely. She also has been selected as one of the finalists in this year’s TEEN TRUTH Film Festival. Her video is called “STAND”. She is a valued member of the Bully Prevention Club. We have a time we call Story Telling Time and she consistently brings up issues that she has had on campus in order to discuss them with her peers. So, not only is she helpful with others, she is looking for ways to improve her ability to assist others. Congratulations Alyssa!

Heart To Heart Girls Group

A group that meets once a week during lunch time.  Mrs. Gorlick, school counselor, is the facilitator.  The group discusses a variety of topics such as school, friends, and family.  The group does community service as well as fundraisers such as writing "letters to Santa" for the Post Office, celebrating Thanksgiving with a luncheon and making picture frames for home-bound seniors.  There is always the fun end-of-the-year day trip.  The group has gone to Santa Barbara, Catalina, Hollywood and the El Capitan theatre!   Mission Statement

La Mesa's counselor Kathy Gorlick and three of the Heart To Heart girls, Danira, Allison and Tia, went to the Homeinstead Center in Newhall to give them the handmade picture frames they made last week.  The women at the Center were so pleased with the small gifts and gave the Heart To Heart Group a big thank you in the form of a certificate!

The girls were touched by what their little bit of kindness did and asked to offer more help throughout the year as a group.

Tips for your teens:

Anticipate problems that are likely to occur and give your children a chance use their self-calming skills. Have a cue that quickly and privately signals a child to use his relaxation skills to become calm or to focus. It could be a word, or a physical cue.

Helping You Help Your Child

Teach them to be active!

  • Be a role model for an active lifestyle.
  • Find fun, outdoor activities that you can do together as a family.
  • Do slow sustained stretches in the evening before bed.

  • TV shows, avoiding violent shows, those that are fast paced, and material that is inappropriate for your child’s age and level of maturity.
