Golden Valley High School was honored to have American labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta visit and speak to an audience of students, staff, and community members on August 30.
A champion for farm workers, Ms. Huerta founded the Agricultural Workers Association and co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. Her activism led to adoption of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975. Ms. Huerta is an advocate for the working poor, women, and children and is still active in community organizing through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, encouraging grass roots community engagement with voter registration drives and nonpartisan candidate forums. She has received many honors, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award and Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has been inducted into the National Women’s History Museum.
Ms. Huerta reminded us that we are all one human race and encouraged attendees to be engaged in their communities and work for change. In the words of Dolores Huerta, “¡Sí se puede!”
